‘Star Wars’ Fan Animates Colin Trevorrow’s Original ‘Episode IX’ Script

Before J.J. Abrams came on board for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the film featured an entirely different script. Director Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed, Jurassic World) had originally penned a finished version, titled Duel of the Fates, before being taken off the project prior to The Last Jedi’s release, with the script later surfacing online following Episode IX’s theatrical run. One fan, YouTube creator Ethan Taylor (of Mr. Sunday Movies), has decided to animate a short film to give other fans a glimpse of what Duel of the Fates would have looked like.

"Before J.J. Abrams came on board for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Colin Trevorrow was slated to direct his own version, Duel Of The Fates," reads the film’s description. "Vastly different to the Episode 9 that we ended up with it included no Emperor Palpatine, his Master Tor Vallum (using concepts from a cut character from the JJ version) more Rose Tico and General Leia, a double sided lightsaber for Rey, Kylo Ren as the main protagonist and about the same amount of the Knights Of Ren we actually got."

The animated video summarizes the story’s major plot points as laid out by Trevorrow’s script, with some details cut due to production challenges, such as “a Finn Stormtrooper uprising plot.”
