Phillip K Smith III & COS Create an ‘Open Sky’ for Milan Design Week

Celebrated American artist Phillip K Smith III recently joined forces with Swedish label COS to create a sprawling mirror installation for Milan Design Week 2018. The site-specific artwork, titled Open Sky, is located at the 16th-century Palazzo Isimbardi. Accompanying the large-scale installation at historic establishment's courtyard are two smaller works erected in the surrounding garden that is also made of stainless steel and faceted mirrors.

"The piece is inspired very much by that site. It's a circular, faceted, conical installation that merges the Milanese sky with renascence architecture," Smith told Dezeen. "The square of sky above the courtyard transforms into a semi-circular form, that sits on the courtyard floor directly in front of the viewer. The idea was to actively and seamlessly merge the beauty of the surrounding architecture and the sky over Milan, creating an ever-changing experience."

View Open Sky above and expect the installation to launch for public viewing from April 17 through April 22.
