Nintendo & Universal Pictures Want to Make an Animated ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Movie

Two decades after the cult classic Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins, Nintendo is in talks to take another crack at a feature film of the former plumber's epic adventures. According to The Wall Street JournalUniversal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me) are reaching a deal with Nintendo for an animated adaptation of Super Mario Bros.

Last year, Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima reportedly told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun that the company has plans to create movies based on its characters. This isn't the first time WSJ has reported on a Nintendo adaptation: back in 2015, they reported a Netflix-produced The Legend of Zelda series that never came to fruition.
